If you’ve gotten a free burrito from Chipotle in the past few weeks, you’re not alone — the restaurant has shelled out about $20 million worth of them since early February.
Business Insider reports that Chipotle is spending millions of dollars on free food offers in an effort to get customers back into stores following two outbreaks of E. coli last fall. In total, the company is expected to give away $70 million in free burritos between February and May. According toBusiness Insider that’s approximately 16% of the company’s sales last year.
Chipotle executives are optimistic the tactic will be successful.
“Free burritos — turns out it works,” CFO Jack Hartung said Wednesday. “It brings people into the restaurants.”
And Chipotle desperately needs more customers — the restaurant’s same-store sales fell 26.1% in February, following a 36.4% drop in January, Business Insider reports. …(read more)
